I joined Ben & Amanda on a multi-day trip in the Tetons. Not to forget: they also had a baby with them. We met up at Jenny Lake Ranger Station and Ben and I started our hike to Garnet Canyon. We initially had planned that Amanda and Baby would join us to there and stay in camp at Garnet Canyon (9300ft), but luckily, they stayed in the valley as the camp area was very uncomfortable after significant avalanche damage. Early next morning we started our approach to the Grand Teton. We had planned to climb the easy Upper Exum ridge (5.4) but when we got close to the climb Ben wanted to add the much more challenging and sustained Lower Exum Ridge (5.7) to the climb. Climbing the Lower Exum was very steep and sustained and by the time we reached the last pitches before joining the upper easier ridge, my arms were long completely out of power. But Ben led me up safely. Once we were on the less steep upper part climbing was fun and no problem. Even the normal route descend is dramatic on this mountain with a lot of exposure and long airy rappels. We stayed another night at our Garnet Canyon camp before descending the next morning and, hiking together with Amanda and baby, to our remote backcountry camp site at Leigh Lake. The next day we all went on a long hiking loop over the famous Paintbrush Canyon-Cascade Canyon and back to our remote camp. Kudos to Amanda and Ben with a baby in the carrier all day we hiked for more than 20 miles with more than 4500ft elevation gain. After that we spent time sightseeing and at swimming holes in Yellowstone NP.

Ich begleitete Ben und Amanda auf einem mehrtägigen Ausflug in die Tetons. Nicht zu vergessen: Sie hatten auch ein Baby dabei. Wir trafen uns an der Jenny Lake Ranger Station und Ben und ich begannen unsere Wanderung zum Garnet Canyon. Ursprünglich hatten wir geplant, dass Amanda und Baby zu uns kommen und im Lager am Garnet Canyon (2830m) bleiben würden, aber glücklicherweise blieben sie im Tal, da der Lagerbereich nach erheblichen Lawinenschäden sehr ungemütlich war. Früh am nächsten Morgen machten wir uns auf den Weg zum Grand Teton. Wir hatten geplant, den einfachen Upper Exum-Grat (III-IV) zu klettern, aber als wir uns dem Einstieg näherten, wollte Ben den viel anspruchsvolleren und durchgehenden Lower Exum-Grat (V) mitnehmen. Die Kletterei an Lower Exum war sehr steil und durchgehend, und als wir die letzten Seillängen vor dem oberen leichteren Grat erreichten, waren meine Arme schon lange am Ende. Aber Ben führte mich sicher nach oben. Sobald wir den weniger steilen oberen Teil erreicht hatten, machte das Klettern Spaß und war kein Problem. Selbst der Abstieg über die normale Route ist auf diesem Berg dramatisch, sehr ausgesetzt und mit langen, luftigen Abseilstellen. Nach einer weiteren Nacht im Garnet Canyon Camp, stiegen wir am nächsten Morgen ab und wanderten gemeinsam mit Amanda und Baby zu unserem abgelegenen Campingplatz an Leigh Lake. Am nächsten Tag machten wir alle die berühmten Paintbrush Canyon-Cascade Canyon. Ein großes Lob an Amanda und Ben, die den ganzen Tag mit einem Baby in der Trage über mehr als 20 Meilen mit mehr als 1300m Höhenunterschied wanderten. Danach verbrachten wir erholsame Zeit mit Sehenswürdigkeiten und Badestellen im Yellowstone NP.
