South Lake Skiing (May 2023)

Bill, James, & I started after work, so our hike on the closed South Lake Road started late in the evening and we only reached our planned camp location behind South Lake at 2am; by the time we got in our sleeping bags it was 3am. Next morning Bill and I headed up towards the SE side of Mt Gilbert. Once we booted up the short east chute the snow was deep and rotten and we stopped at the notch (~12400ft), skipping the summit slopes. The skiing was mostly good once we were below the steep east facing chute. On day 3 my trip was cut short by the rear clip of my climbing skins breaking off and missing after the first switchbacks on our way to Mt Johnson. Bill and James continued on while I was booting around the slope until I found the missing piece. After that, I followed their tracks until I found a nice rest spot above Treasure Lakes. The afternoon descent and hike out on the paved road felt even more endless than the way in. Bill, James und ich machten uns nach der Arbeit auf den Weg, also begann unsere Wanderung auf der gesperrten South Lake Road erst spät am Abend und wir erreichten unser geplantes Camp hinter South Lake erst um 2 Uhr morgens; Als wir in unsere Schlafsäcke schlüpften, war es schon 3 Uhr früh. Am nächsten Morgen machten sich Bill und ich auf den Weg zur SO Seite von Mt. Gilbert. Als wir die kurze Ostrinne aufstiegen, war der Schnee schon tief und faul und wir stoppten in der Scharte (~3800 m) und ließen die Gipfelhänge aus. Das Skifahren war größtenteils gut, nachdem wir unterhalb der steilen Ostrinne waren. Am dritten Tag wurde meine Tour abgekürzt, weil nach den ersten Spitzkehren auf dem Weg zu Mt. Johnson der hintere Clip meiner Steigfelle abbrach und fehlte. Bill und James stiegen weiter auf, während ich auf dem Hang unter mir suchte, bis ich das fehlende Teil fand. Danach folgte ich ihren Spuren, bis ich oberhalb von Treasure Lakes einen schönen Rastplatz fand. Der Abstieg am Nachmittag und die Wanderung auf der asphaltierten Straße fühlten sich noch endloser an als am Hinweg.
