Slide Mountain (May 2023)

Bill was already in Owens Valley for some of his bicycle training, I found him late in the evening near the trailhead (7850ft) where I slept next to the car. In the morning we hiked into the valley and soon on skins up the more than 2000ft high chute up the east side of Slide Peak. Once we reached the upper slopes of the peak I was feeling either the altitude or just general weakness and started falling behind Bill more and more. I turned around at about 11,500ft and Bill joined me soon after skiing more of the upper slopes. The skiing was some of the best I had all year until we reached the lower part of the chute where it was heavy and deep. Bill war bereits für einen Teil seines Fahrradtrainings in Owens Valley, ich fand ihn spät abends in der Nähe des Trailheads (2400m), wo ich neben dem Auto schlief. Am Morgen wanderten wir tiefer ins Tal und bald darauf stiegen wir auf Fellen die über 600m hohe breite Rinne an der Ostseite des Slide Peak auf. Als wir die oberen Hänge erreichten, spürte ich entweder die Höhe oder einfach nur allgemeine Schwäche und fiel immer mehr hinter Bill zurück. Ich drehte auf etwa 3500m um und Bill war bald wieder bei mir, nachdem er die oberen Hänge befahren hatte. Das Skifahren war vom besten, das ich das ganze Jahr über hatte, bis wir den unteren Teil der Rinne erreichten, wo der Schnee schwer und tief war.
