South Fork Bowl (Apr 2023)

After an endless series of winter storms this is our first exploration to find safe Sierra skiing conditions of the season. We sleep in a motel In Owens Valley and drive up the only passable road, towards Glacier Lodge. The road is open to about 7300 ft and 1.8 mi short of the actual trailhead. We hike in the flat valley for about 3 mi before we turn left and up the steep bowl. The wind gusts in the bowl are very strong and it sometimes gets difficult to stay upright or see the ground. I continue to about 10,200ft before I have enough. Bill gets a few hundred feet higher but soon we are back together and ski down with some changing and challenging snow conditions. Nach einer endlosen Serie von Winterstürmen ist dies unser erster Test der Saison, sichere Skibedingungen in der Sierra zu finden. Wir schlafen in einem Motel im Owens Valley und fahren die einzige passierbare Straße hinauf in Richtung Glacier Lodge. Die Straße ist bis etwa 2200m und 3 km vom eigentlichen Trailhead entfernt offen. Wir wandern etwa 5 km durch das flache Tal, bevor wir nach links das steile Kar aufsteigen. Die Windböen im Kar sind sehr stark und es wird manchmal schwierig, aufrecht zu bleiben oder den Boden zu sehen. Ich gehe weiter bis auf etwa 3100m, bevor ich genug habe. Bill steigt fast 100m höher, aber schon bald sind wir wieder zusammen und fahren bei wechselnden und herausfordernden Schneebedingungen hinunter.
