Sardine Canyon & Red Mountain (Apr 2023)

Touring with Bill and James above Owens Valley. The record snow levels of this winter make Onion Valley Road impassable even below the big switchback. Bill and I started from below 7000ft and worked our way up the many benches of Sardine Canyon to about 10,400ft before we reached our agreed turnaround time of 1pm. Skiing was mostly good. After a dip in the Keough Hot Springs we spent the night at the Pit campground near Bishop and toured on the N side of Red Mountain the next day. We could start and end right from the car and climbed to about 10,500ft before the last icy and hard slope to the top.

Touren mit Bill und James in Owens Valley. Die Rekordschneemengen dieses Winters machen die Onion Valley Road unpassierbar unterhalb der großen Serpentine. Bill und ich starteten unterhalb von 2100m und arbeiteten uns die vielen Bänke des Sardine Canyon hinauf bis auf etwa 3170m, bevor wir unsere vereinbarte Umkehrzeit von 13 Uhr erreichten. Skifahren war größtenteils gut. Nach einem Bad in den Keough Hot Springs verbrachten wir die Nacht auf dem Pit Campingplatz in der Nähe von Bishop und machten am nächsten Tag eine Tour auf der Nordseite von Red Mountain. Wir konnten direkt vom Auto auf 2150m starten und stiegen bis auf etwa 3200m auf, wo wir den letzten eisigen und harten Hang zum Gipfel erreichten.
