Pioneer Basin (Sep 2023)

After many failed scheduling attempts, this time the hike to Pioneer Basin actually happened. Because of the very high snow year the previous winter we had a September hike with many snowfields, blooming flowers, and mosquitos. James and I hiked to Steelhead Lake (10,380ft) for our first camp. Then a short cross-country travel over Stanford Col (11,580ft) brought us into Pioneer Basin. After a nice relaxing afternoon and evening we continued with another cross-country day over Crocker Col (~12,000ft) and Hopkins Pass (11,400ft) to camp at Big McGee Lake (10,472ft). On the fourth day we climbed Red Slate Mountain (13,163ft) for its beautiful views. Day 5 was just a fast hike back to the trailhead (~7870ft). Nach vielen gescheiterten Planungsversuchen fand die Wanderung zur Pioneer Basin dieses Mal tatsächlich statt. Aufgrund der sehr hohen Schneelage im vergangenen Winter hatten wir im September eine Wanderung mit vielen Schneefeldern, blühenden Blumen und Mücken. James und ich wanderten für unser erstes Lager zu Steelhead Lake (3160m). Dann brachte uns eine kurze weglose Wanderung über das Stanford Col (3530m) in die Pioneer Basin. Nach einem schönen, entspannten Nachmittag und Abend gings am nächsten Tag weiter weglos über Crocker Col (~3660m) und Hopkins Pass (3475m), um am Big McGee Lake (3192m) zu campen. Am vierten Tag bestiegen wir den Red Slate Mountain (4012m) wegen der wunderschönen Aussicht. Tag 5 war nur eine schnelle Wanderung zurück zum Trailhead (~2400m).
