Palisades (June 2013)

This was a trip into the Palisades for only a few days. We started late on Saturday evening due to problems getting a permit. While Richard and Taylor were motivated to hike all night and get to Glacier Camp at ~12,200ft right away, Tim and I opted to camp early at ~9000ft to ease acclimation. Tim lost motivation on the second day and returned back down, and I caught up with Richard and Taylor below glacier camp where they had camped. In the end we all camped the second night at the edge of the Palisade Glacier. With a poor weather forecast and a very windy night it was not too promising to climb North Palisade through the U-notch couloir, but we still tried. The ice was hard even that early in the season, probably due to the very low snowfall all winter. The higher we got, the windier and colder it got, with snowfall and low visibility. In the end we turned around at about 13,700ft and rappelled back down the couloir. It was raining the rest of the day and I spent it under my little tarp. The next morning had somewhat better weather, but still no Palisade peak was visible. After having spent almost 18hrs straight in my now damp sleeping bag, I left camp alone and early to climb Mount Gayley (13,510ft) to have breakfast high on the climb in a wind protected sunny spot before we headed back down and home. Das war ein kurzer Trip in die Palisades. Wir starteten am Samstag abend da wir kein früheres Permit bekommen konnten. Richard und Taylor waren sehr motiviert und wollten noch in der Nacht bis zum Glacier Camp auf ~3700m aufsteigen, Tim und ich campierten auf ~2700m um unsere akklimatisierung zu erleichtern. Tim war nicht motiviert am nächsten Tag und kehrte um, und ich fand Richard und Taylor in einem Camp entlang des Zustiegs. So erreichten wir alle den Gletscherrand für unser zweites Camp. Wir hatten eine schlechte Wettervorhersage und eine sehr windige Nacht, so war es nicht sehr vielversprechend aber wir versuchten trotzdem die Kletterei der North Palisade über das U-notch Couloir. Das Eis war hart obwohl es früh im Jahr war, wahrscheinlich weil sehr wenig Schnee fiel im letzten Winter. Je höher wir kamen desto kälter und windiger wurde es, mir Schneefall und schlechter Sicht. Zuletzt kehrten wir um auf ~4150m und seilten wieder ab über das Eiscouloir. Es regnete den rest des Tages und ich verbrachte ihn unter meiner kleinen Regenplane. Das Wetter am nächsten Morgen war etwas besser, aber nach wie vor waren keine Gipfel sichtbar. Nach fast 18 Stunden in meinem jetzt feuchten Schlafsack machte ich einen frühen Start um Mount Gayley (4118m) alleine zu klettern. Ich hatte ein hohes Frühstück in einer sonnigen und windgeschützten Nische kurz unter dem Gipfel bevor wir zurück ins Tal aufbrachen.
