Matterhorn Peak (Apr 2018)

A skitour with Paul, Anton, & Andrew. We ascended Horse Creek Canyon to about 9400ft where the valley opens up and set up camp. Next morning we continued up to the small glacier below Matterhorn Peak. Here we split, Paul and I left our skis behind and climbed the icy E couloir to the summit (12,279ft). Anton and Andrew booted up the snow-covered W couloir carrying their skis. When Paul and I had worked our way down the couloir we found a large avalanche cone below the W couloir, but luckily also two new ski tracks from it. We found Anton and Andrew back in our camp, uninjured, but shaken up. The first triggered the couloir at the very top when starting to ski and got carried down with the avalanche. There was a lot of discussion on risk assessments on the drive home. Eine Skitour mit Paul, Anton und Andrew. Wir stiegen Horse Creek Canyon auf etwa 2870m auf und schlugen unser Lager auf, wo sich das Tal öffnet. Am nächsten Morgen stiegen wir weiter auf zum kleinen Gletscher unterhalb des Matterhorn Peak. Hier trennten wir uns, Paul und ich ließen unsere Skier zurück und stiegen durch das eisige Ostcouloir zum Gipfel (3743m). Anton und Andrew stiegen mit ihren Skiern die schneebedeckte Westcouloir auf. Als Paul und ich uns durch das Couloir heruntergearbeitet hatten, fanden wir unterhalb des Westcouloirs einen großen Lawinenkegel, aber glücklicherweise auch zwei neue Skispuren davon. Wir fanden Anton und Andrew unverletzt, aber aufgewühlt in unserem Lager. Der erste löste beim Skifahren das Couloir ganz oben aus und wurde von der Lawine mitgerissen. Auf der Heimfahrt gab es viele Diskussionen über Risikobewertungen.
