Mt Baden-Powell (Apr 2023)

Because Bill had not much time on Easter Sunday we opted for a short and local tour that turned out anything but short. The Caltrans website had stated that the access road would be open for the first few miles and we hoped to use the bicycle on the south facing side of the approach. Instead of a fairly easy 5mi access to the trailhead we had an odyssey of carrying our bicycle up the snowy road for about 2 miles only to find the road on the sunny side to be impassable by bicycle and to continue a 3 mile hike downhill in ski boots. Finally, we reached the actual trailhead at about 6,600ft and started ascending the ridge to Mt Baden-Powell (9,356ft). From the top of the ridge at 9,200ft we skied down the twisty chute back to the trailhead. The snow was very heavy, and we triggered a few small wet slides but nothing dangerous. Then we still had to return 3 miles uphill and 2 miles downhill with our bicycle on the shoulder. Bill was a bit late for his family Easter-dinner. Da Bill am Ostersonntag nicht viel Zeit hatte, entschieden wir uns für eine kurze und lokale Tour, die alles andere als kurz ausfiel. Auf der Caltrans-Website war angegeben, dass die Zufahrtsstraße auf den ersten paar Kilometern offen sein würde und wir hofften, das Fahrrad auf der Südseite der Zufahrt nutzen zu können. Statt eines recht einfachen 8 km Zugangs zum Trailhead hatten wir eine Odyssee, bei der wir unser Fahrrad etwa 3 km die verschneite Straße hinauftragen mussten, nur um dann festzustellen, dass die Straße auf der Sonnenseite mit dem Fahrrad nicht passierbar war, und eine weitere 5km-Wanderung bergab in Skischuhen nötig war. Schließlich erreichten wir den eigentlichen Trailhead auf etwa 2000m und begannen auf Mt Baden-Powell (2853m) aufzusteigen. Von der Spitze des Rückens auf 2800m Höhe fuhren wir mit Skiern die gewundene Rinne zurück zum Trailhead ab. Der Schnee war sehr schwer und wir lösten ein paar kleine Nassschneelawinen aus, aber nichts Gefährliches. Dann mussten wir uns noch 5km bergauf und 3 km bergab mit unserem Fahrrad auf der Schulter zurück arbeiten. Bill kam etwas zu spät zum Osteressen seiner Familie.
