Pheasant (Fasan / Phasianus colchicus) (updated:2006-04-16)

The Pheasant L 70-90cm (27-35")(tail 35-40cm)
was imported to Europe from Caucasus or China in the Middle Ages. It breeds in farmland with protecting groves and woodland with dense ground vegetation, needleleaf plantations, and in larger parks and gardens. It sleeps in trees. Natural food is vegetation and insects. The Pheasant builds it's nest on the ground. The male is unmistakable recognised by it's extravagantly long brown cross striped tail, the mahogany brown plumage, the dark glossy green/blue/violet head with naked wart like red chins, and the white nape ring. The female is well camouflaged by it's beige-brown plumage with v-formed dark spots. The female also has a long tail, but shorter than the male's tail.
