The Nuthatch L 12-14,5cm (4.7-5.7") breeds in mixed and deciduous woodland with some old trees, and in larger parks and gardens. Visits often feeders during wintertime. Nesting in tree holes. The Nuthatch's silhouette is typical without a neck with a large head and long pointed bill. It is quick and spry and moves abruptly i.e. when it climbs on branches and trunks. It is one of the only birds that has the ability to climb head-first downwards. It has a blue grey back and crown, and a rust beige breast and abdomen. The throat and chin is beige with a black eye-line and white eyebrow. The Ferroscandinavian variation Sitta europaea europaea has a more beige breast and abdomen. |
