Jackdaw (Allike / Corvus monedula) (updated:2007-05-01)

The Jackdaw L 30-34cm (11.7-13.3") WS 64-73cm (25-29")
breeds both near humans as well as in mature parks and deciduous woodland with adequate trees for nesting. The couples stick together for the rest of their lives, and is almost always seen together. Furthermore it is a very social bird seeking food in large flocks, and gathers specially in the autumn and winter in huge flocks in the twilight for overnight stay in selected parks or groves. The Jackdaw can be tamed, and can learn some simple human sounds. Nests are build in chimneys, ventilation holes, tree holes and caves. At distance quite dark - a typical crow bird. At close range it's obvious it isn't black but dark grey and has a lighter grey shawl around the nape. The eye is light Alice blue or light grey. The bill is shorter and weaker than the Crow's bill. It is recognised in flight at the faster and deeper wing beats with their relative shorter and more rounded wings.
