The Bullfinch L 15.5-17.5cm (6.1-6.8") breeds in mixed woodland with some conifers, in UK also in larger parks and gardens. Often seen as pairs. The Bullfinch is nesting in bushes or trees, often in dense conifers. The food is various seeds and buds of fruit trees, which can be a pest in orchards. During summertime the food is also insects. The bullfinch is a pretty large and bulky compact build finch, with a bull neck, pretty large head and a very short thick greyish bill. It has pretty long wings and tail. In flight it's recognised by the white rump and grey-white wing bars in contrast to the black tail and grey back. The adults have a black cap and head. The adult males have coral/salmon red underparts and ash grey back, while females have grey-beige underparts and brown toned greyish back. |
