The Barn Swallow L 17-21cm (6.6-8.2") is a common breeding bird in farmland, at farms, villages and harbours. Winter quarter in Africa. The nest is build like a neat cup-shaped nest constructed of mud collected in their beaks reinforced by plant parts. It hunts insects often flying low above the ground or water and shows a remarkable manoeuvrability, necessary to feed on flying insects while airborne. It has a long deeply forked thin tail and curved pointed wings. The back is blue-shining black, the belly and breast is off-white. It has a blue-black breast band and a tawny brown throat and forehead. Small white spots can be seen when the outer tail feathers are spread. |
