I start the first few courses of interlock brick. We put a "soldier course" (bricks going all in the same direction) along the edge, then the basic pattern is called basket weave. It is basically just 2 one way, 2 the other way, repeat forever. We made the patio and the walkway even number of bricks wide, mostly because we're not stupid. However, the unsquareness of both the building (the building is new, but the foundation it is built on is over a hundred years old) and the sidewalk caused trouble.

The centre of the patio has a straight brick pattern.
