First Western Kingbird Nest in Mississippi

On the afternoon of June 6, 2004, I located a pair of Western Kingbirds at a power substation in Tunica Co. Mississippi. The female was sitting on a nest about 20 foot up on a cross bar of a power pole.

(Since writing the above, I have determined the nest is actually about 20 feet north of the Tunica Co. Line and is in DeSoto Co, Mississippi. Sorry about that)

While watching these two, I located another male that was acting as if he had another female nearby but I never did find the suspected second nest.

I have occasionally found adult Western Kingbirds along the Mississippi River Levee from Memphis down to Greenville, MS during the summer breeding season since June 1988.

I found the first nest for Tennessee in Memphis, June 1998 and we now have a small colony with 2 to 3 nests each year at Ensley Bottoms. Ensley is located in the extreme southwest corner of TN and is about 20 miles north of the location of the Mississippi nest or nests. ( UPDATE: Up to 19 nests located in Shelby Co. TN in one year)
