I have watched Smith's Longspurs, almost under foot, incessantly feeding on one of these fine seeds after another. Then I would pick up a seed and marvel that a bird could make a living off such dry fodder. They run the seeds back and forth through their bills, like one eats corn on the cob just like the bird pictured here.
