BNS -6-26-04 Checking youngster - Ensley

It does not take long for the down to dry and the head bobs up and down. Within minutes the youngster is trying out its short rubbery legs.

Jeff, Just wonderful. I didn't realize what wonderful birds BNSs are, until I had an experience last year here in Alabama, east of Mobile, watching a pair of BNSs from before they built their nest until the young fledged and eventually all went their ways. The most dramatic (and traumatic) experience I witnessed was when a Yellow-crowned N-Heron flew into their little pond. I believe, and they apparently did also, that it was there to dine on baby stilts! They went beserk! I never heard such screeching & commotion! At one point one was actually standing on its back beating it on the head, while the other was directly in front of it, flying into its face! This uproar lasted probably less than a minute, before the YCNH decided it wasn't worth it, and flew off, defeated. I'm not ashamed to admit I get tears in my eyes, just remembering. Thank you, Claire Krusko
