BNS - Eggs - 6-5-04 Ensley

This photo was taken on June 5, a typical nest will have 4 eggs but I've seen successful nests have as few as 2 and as many as 6. One pair raised 6 young but one disappeared before they could fly. I was fortunate enough to be at Ensley the afternoon the "Magnificent Seven" migrated south.

The final egg in this clutch was laid the following day and they started hatching on June 26. The time from the start of incubation to hatching varies here at Ensley from 21 to 25 days.

BNS eggs normally hatch synchronously and usually in the morning. I've seen some eggs hatch a day after the first eggs had hatched. Evidently the sounds coming from the egg keep the adults around but most of the time the young are led away from the nest shortly after the young get their land legs.
