Duke (2009-2017)

Duke was found without identification roaming far northwest Oklahoma City in July of 2011. A vet estimated he was about two years old and had probably been walking the streets for about two months. There is a decent possibility that he became a "street dog" after a violent tornado moved through Piedmont, OK on May 24, 2011. If that's the case, it might also explain why he was so skittish. Duke was a great dog all the way to the end. He was extremely athletic and I believe that with the right owners, he could have been a competition dog. His speed and agility allowed him to frequently pluck birds out of the air. Many times, he would bring the birds back into the house - and we found plenty. Duke was diagnosed with lymphoma in December of 2016. He underwent aggressive treatment and handled it well through the spring of 2017. In June, he started showing signs that the cancer was becoming resistant to the treatments. He still seemed in good enough shape to keep around well into July. On July 18th, his condition took a dramatic turn for the worse. We made the decision to have him euthanized the following day - July 19, 2017. It was hard on the entire family, but it is comforting to know that he no longer suffers. Rest in peace, Duke Boy.
