Hampstead Get Together August 2007

It was great seeing all these friends and family in one place and one time!

A few comments about the images, since this is a public gallery. I decided not to shoot flash because I knew I would be shooting a lot of images (I shot over 300). Flash is very intrusive and, with 3 DSLR cameras in action, it was enough of a paparazzi atmosphere. Plus, the light was great in that room, although a bit low. Most of these images were shot at ISO 800. I don't usually like to shoot 800, but I was impressed with the D200's performance here. I started with a 35mm F/1.4 Ai-S manual focus lens. I couldn't get close enough so I switched to a 105 Ai-S manual focus. I got close enough but couldn't keep up with the focus, especially with Harrison. I finally caved and pulled out the 70-200VR, which solved a lot of problems.

I am usually a ruthless culler; I have to be because I shoot about 20,000 frames a year. I could get this down to 30 or so, but I decided to post as many as I could for posterity. Events like this can never be repeated. Some of these images are very imperfect but for the sake of family enjoyment I included them. Oh, for just one or two more stops of light!

In reviewing the images, I was amazed at how difficult it is to get two people in focus at the same time, without motion blur, while shooting at 1/40s or so and wide open or nearly so. F/4 is a much saner aperture for those shots but the light levels simply did not allow for it. On the plus, side, there is a lot of nice bokeh (out of focus rendition) in these images. All 3 lenses sport very fine bokeh, some of Nikon's best ever.

These images are all straight out of the camera JPGs. Too many to post process individually; I would never have gotten them posted....
