18-70 DX Lens Challenge 2

Images shot with a D200 on Gitzo (correction: G1410] and Markins M10 Ballhead. Mirror Lockup used with remote release.
Lenses: Nikkor 18-70DX and Nikkor 35mm F/1.4 Ai
The 18-70DX was shot at F/4.2 (wide open) and F/5.6
The 35 Ai was shot at F/4 and F/5.6
Workflow:

1) Images straight out of camera, except sharpening set to none and USM = 66/5/5, rendered in Nikon Capture NX 1.1.
2) Images were shot using matrix metering, aperture priority. The camera shot the 35 Ai 1/2 stop hotter. In addition, the overall exposure, after adjusting for that half stop, was such that the 35 Ai was another 3/8 stop hotter. I reduced exposure comp by 0.87 stop in NX, final value determined by balancing the sky to about luminosity 160.
3) Rendered as 16 bit TIF by NX
4) Opened in Photoshop CS. Select All, copy to clipboard, new window and paste. This stripped the exif- no cheating!
5) Saved as maximum quality JPG (quality 12). Full res 100% crops.

Notes:

1) the white siding on most of the houses was blown. Do not use the white siding for your analysis. No other parts of the scene were blown.

2) the 4 images with a B appended to the image name were rendered with the camera's auto white balance. The child gallery below contains the same images rendered as Direct Sunlight (5200K) WB.

It should be very easy to distinguish the differences between one of the finest Nikkor primes ever made and this cheap consumer zoom.
