Coming in Hot

The San Elijo Lagoon is an amazing bird sanctuary on the North County Coast. If you are wondering which species is at the top of the pecking order maybe this shot will help. The Great Blue Heron is 4 feet tall and has a wingspan of 6-7 feet. Here is one coming in hot near a Snowy Egret and Mallard duck, which shows the relative scale and dominance of this magnificent bird.

What a great capture to put everything in scale. Although I've photographed both myself many different times, I actually didn't realize that a snowy egret is smaller than a mallard. The wide wings of the heron seems ready to embrace the smaller birds.
