The Guitar Player

Look, I do a lot of street photography, but have to confess it is still pretty unnerving to take shots of strangers without their permission- especially up close. So when I came upon this guitar player sitting on a bench at the beach I really wanted to take his portrait, but didn't know if I should ask first. After about a minute (that passed like an hour) I simply stepped in, got down low and took the shot. He never looked up and I left. Now I'm glad I didn't ask for permission. I didn't want a pose, I wanted to capture him, in that moment lost in his music. And that's exactly what I got.

So much drama here in the tones, details and subject!
Brought to a great height by his concentration.

I love the capture of his”essence.” That is often lost when asking permission. V

Nice shot! I seldom ask permission, and so far no problem. ( now I just probably put a hex on myself)

Very cool shot. Out in the open, no need to ask permission if publicly viewable, but yes, I can understand it. ~VV~

An excellent candid of this musician at work. I can understand the dilemma about asking for permission, or not.

a Strat cat in Bb suggests he is deep in a bluesey tune...it would have been unkind to interrupt him, and the moment would have been lost..

A superb portrait of this musician in action. The problem when you ask the permission is that you loose the expression and/or the pose that first give you the desire to take the picture. We steal moments that we are alone to see even, like Neil, to engage in conversation and to show on the LCD screen the photo that we took...

I understand and appreciate your dilemma. So glad you caught him in his element. B&W makes it more dramatic. V

I rarely ask for permission. I quickly smile and thank them. Better yet if you have wordy friend with you who engages them in conversation, enabling you to catch interesting expressions. When I am carrying a camera I become single minded.

I have the same problem but when I do I usually switch to a longer lens. I have gotten better at the asking permission part. This image is perfect - well worth the effort and your trepidation. ~BV~
