If you have any doubts that surfing can be a dangerous sport, then take a close look at this shot that I took yesterday. I know both surfers and they are very experienced, but this encounter in the waves came pretty close to being a disaster. Fortunately it was a near miss and no one was injured. I recently met a doctor who is head of reconstructive eye surgery at Scripps. He said that he has treated surfers in the past that needed surgery to repair eye lids sliced apart by the fins on the boards during wipeouts.
