When I do surf photography for surfers I do it in the morning. When I shoot for myself, I do it at sunset. That's when there is an intersection of art and action because the light can produce magical effects. Trouble is good conditions for sunset surfing photography are rare. You need good waves, good surfers to ride them, and clear skies to the horizon so the low angle of the sun can backlight the scene.
