Many people who visit Maryland's Eastern Shore are usually drawn to the beach in Ocean City or to the beaches in neighboring Delaware. Whether they come from other parts of Maryland or from farther away, most usually head to their destinations via the flat, straight and boring highways that crisscross the Delmarva Peninsula. Interesting back roads exist there, but they often lead to dead-ends on private properties or bodies of water. The big challenge for driving enthusiasts is to find and string together a sufficient number of roads that are scenic, off the beaten path and delightful.

Easton resident and PCA member Tom Divilio met that challenge in the spring of 2018 when he designed an Eastern Shore tour route and then proposed it to me. Soon after, I drove over there and checked out the route with him. I liked it. So, fellow Tour & Rally Committee Co-Chair Randy and I agreed to add Tom's tour to PCA Chesapeake's 2018 Tour & Rally Schedule.

I eventually made one major change in the route. Instead of using the Cambridge-Dorchester Airport as the starting place, I chose a location in Easton as the assembly and launch point -- in particular, the parking lot of CPR Classic East, a renowned vintage Porsche restoration shop. CPR Classic East principal Bruce Wakefield kindly and gladly approved our plan to use his parking lot. And more than that, he generously volunteered to provide coffee and doughnuts, as well as guided tours of his facility.

So, on the morning of Oct. 7, 2018, Sunday, all preparations were in place. In perfect weather, 48 PCA members in 27 cars assembled in Easton starting at 8:30 AM to avail of Bruce's hospitality. We then held a drivers' meeting at 9:30, as scheduled, and departed a little after 10:00 in three groups of cars, led by Tom, Mark and me, respectively, with Randy serving as launch director and overall sweeper. We made an intermediate stop for about 15 minutes at the Cambridge-Dorchester Airport, where one PCA couple in a Boxster joined the tour, raising our total to 51 people in 28 cars.

Altogether, we drove about 60 miles, mostly on charming and enjoyable back roads with little to no other traffic until, via a causeway, we reached Hoopers Island. We then made a U-turn and drove back a few miles to our lunch destination, Old Salty's Restaurant in Fishing Creek, MD. We all got there at around noon.

Our buffet consisted of crab cakes, fried chicken, pork loin, garden salad, potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and other side dishes, plus soft drinks, iced tea and water. Before lunch, tour participants had a chance to examine the 28 assembled Porsches and vote for their favorite. As the lunch was winding down, I announced the winning car -- a rare and hard-to-get 2018 911 GT3 Touring owned by Scott.

After lunch, as the tour participants were leaving Old Salty's, many told me that they loved Tom's tour and had a great time. In this gallery, I am pleased to share the few photos I managed to take during this 11th event in our 2018 Tour & Rally Schedule.
