1950 MG TD, left, and 1947 MG TC (2955)

"If the TC was the advance guard of the sports car movement in the United States, the TD was the invasion force, with the vast majority of the almost 30,000 built reaching our shores. The 1250cc engine was unchanged, but the TD gained independent front suspension and rack and pinion steering, although it lost a bit of its predecessor's grace with the switch to 15-inch wheels. This solid-wheel TD is an early example of the car that took America by storm.

"Fewer than 10,000 MG TCs were built, but they had influence far out of proportion to their numbers. Powered by a 1250cc pushrod engine mated to a four-speed transmission and with live axles and leaf springs front and rear, performance was modest. Yet, this beautiful traditional roadster introduced many thousands to the joys of sports car motoring and, as has been said many times: 'The sports car America loved first.' "
