Genuine and Original COBRAS in Colorado -- Sept. 9, 2023

In early September 2023, my wife and I visited Colorado for nine days with five other couples. We spent seven days driving around the Centennial State for fun, covering about 1,500 miles in the process. We started from Boulder, about 30 miles north of Denver. Using a special tour route I had prepared, we proceeded to Nederland, Vail, Aspen, Ouray, Silverton, Durango, Telluride, Gateway, Grand Junction, back to Aspen, Independence Pass, the Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park, Colorado Springs and Pikes Peak. Among the many awesome roads we drove on were the fantastic Million Dollar Highway and the spectacular stretch of I-70 between Vail and Glenwood Springs.

On the fourth day of our 7-day drive, we visited the Gateway Canyons Resort. The key attraction I wanted my friends to see was John Hendricks's fabulous 50+ car collection at the resort's Gateway Auto Museum. However, I didn't realize until the night before that the entire car collection had been sold less than a month earlier at an auction in California. That was very disappointing news, indeed.

The drive from Telluride to Gateway was magnificent, especially as we got closer to the resort owned by Hendricks, the founder of the Discovery Channel and Discovery Communications. Little did I know that a big surprise was waiting for us at the resort. By mistake, I led everybody to the wrong parking lot at the back of the resort. And lo and behold, two genuine, original and rare Shelby Cobras from the 1960s were parked there. After lunch, we saw five more of the million-dollar, Ford-powered cars at the parking lot. NOT replicas. A total of only 998 AC Shelby Cobras were built from 1962 through 1967 by AC Cars in Great Britain and Shelby American in Los Angeles.

The Cobra owners were surprised by the sudden arrival of six couples, who had parked their cars nearby -- a 2021 Porsche 718 Boxster S, a 2023 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid, three rental Mustangs and a rental Cadillac SUV. Coming from different parts of the U.S., the Cobra drivers very graciously and gladly shared with us their enthusiasm for their remarkable cars and the Colorado driving tour they were on. They told us seven more genuine Cobras were on their way to join theirs.

In this gallery, I am pleased to share the photos I took of the seven 289 and 427 Cobras, which were like manna from Heaven on that day. Seeing them at the Gateway Canyons Resort partially made up for our disappointment in missing out on enjoying the Hendricks car collection.
