Kyivo-Pecherska Lavra (The Cave Monastery). "Lavra" is the term used by the Orthodox Church for its largest monastery. Founded in 1051 by monks Antony and Feodosiy. A cave is "pechera" in Ukrainian, hence the name of monastery.
The golden domes of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra nicely command the city skyline. Its magnificent complex had been created for almost nine centuries. The Dormition Cathedral, the Gate Church of the Trinity, The All Saints' Church, St. Nicholas' Church and many others comprise this strikingly beautiful ensemble of almost a hundred historical buildings, 42 of them being unique masterpieces of architecture.
