America West: Landscapes

The gallery features photos made in 2004 while traveling in Washington, Oregon and the California Coast, inland to Joshua Tree, Death valley, and up the Eastern Sierra. America West landscapes is a tribute to the splendor and diversity in the natural world of America West. Canon 20D, my first DSLR. All photographs in this gallery made with either 70-200 L f/4, or 17-40 L f/4. Your Votes of this gallery, and photos you enjoy are appreciated.

It is refreshing to see works from the roads less traveled, or those less documented. Not many have seen the Eastern Sierra with its high plateaus and valleys or its gray-green ground. Your uncommon views bring the dryness of the spartan land right to my throat.

It seems, however, that you excel no matter what you shoot or where you are. You get the depth that patience brings in composing. That clarity of thought brings us quiet understanding of your subjects. From withered weed to harsh desert mountains we gather their place in nature.

On the technical side, I appreciate also your lighting. Your drama is in the composing, but the light is natural and brings the viewer right to the reality of your subjects. You under-expose just a hair's width, never too much as some do to the point of obvious manipulation.

I hope your family understands the time you spend in getting your photographs right the way you see them. Sometimes that patience you have may not be appreciated by others!

Hello Norman. What a great gallery! I am reminded here of the vast amounts of wide open space in the USA, and especially in the west. The colors, solitude, and untamed beauty are all so wonderful to look at....and of course I am sure the photos are only a taste of of what it is actually like being there in person. I am sure you enjoyed walking through such a panoramic landscape. You have put together an excellent collection of images...that really convey the essence of the west. Well done, Norman. I have added this gallery to my favorites.

Hi Norman, This is such an oustanding gallery. Each image is like an incredible painting. Your palette of colors is phenomenal and each composition is just so beautiful. Your placement, contrasts with lighting, shapes and textures is so inspiring to me . . . The emotions these images create are hard to describe . . . thank you so much !

Amazing photos, relying so much on your powerful sense of strong design. Softened color and almost monochromatic in many instances - proving without a doubt what a magical sense of mood and design you have. Other of your galleries highlight your fantastic use of color, but these are definitely wondrous studies of form, design, and mood. I'm humbled by the beauty of nature that you so readily present to the world in a format that invites the viewer in, in such a mesmerizing manner. Susan
