During the months of October through February large numbers of snow geese and sandhill cranes winter in the refuge. When these photos were taken during the last week in November estimates of bird numbers were 38,000 snow geese, 4,000 sandhill cranes, and a much smaller number of Ross' Geese, in addition to resident birds. The birds may be at different places in the refuge at any given time depending on the time of day, weather, wind speed and direction, and food supply. Most of the photos in this collection were taken in the vicinity of the Farm Fields and Flight Deck (circled in red on the map).
