My grandmother, Alice and her brother, James

I photographed this tintype of my grandmother (my mother's mother) and her brother. My grandmother was born in 1903 and her brother was born in 1901, so I would say this was probably taken around 1906 or 1907.
Their father committed suicide when they were still very young, leaving my great grandmother to raise them on her own. For a few years in her childhood my grandmother lived with her Aunt Martha and Uncle Baskin in South Carolina for medical reasons. Uncle Baskin was a well known and respected surgeon and the hospital in Gaffney, South Carolina was named after him for a time. Unable to have children of their own, they wanted to adopt Alice, but my great grandmother could not consent to this. They continued to play an important role in Alice's life, even when she had become an adult.
