These photos are from a trip I made in the early spring of 1978 from Mazar-i-Sharif to the city of Herat. Part of the way it was raining and much of the roads consisted of muddy ruts. We drove in Russian trucks that were very high off the ground. On many hills the passengers had to get out and walk so the trucks could get across without slipping and sliding out of the mud ruts. The truck I was in only made it as far as a little outside of Bala Murghab. There I had to switch to another. The journey actually started in Sibragon. I had gone from Mazar to Balkh by bus, spent some days in Balkh, the bus to Aqcha for a few days, then bus again to Sibragon. From there it took 4 days to cover the distance to Herat by truck.
