Nowadays the city is also famous for it's 'living' folk/art festival, which happens on the February full moon, which just happened to be when I found myself there.
***************************************************************************************************
Held in the months of January-February (on the full moon), the Desert Festival brings an exciting spirit to Jaisalmer. For three days, the otherwise barren landscape of Jaisalmer comes to life and is clustered with hordes of colourfully dressed people.
During these days, Jaisalmer gets a chance to parade its exuberant charm to the world )or all that attemd, that is). Some chosen and cherished moments of the glorious and illustrious past and affluent culture are on display. Traditional dances backed by high pitched music take the folk dancers and the audience on an euphoric trip. The turban-tying competition and Mr. Desert contest add a touch of excitement to the festive celebrations.
The famous Gair dancers and the traditional fire-dancers leave the crowds enchanted whenever they perform. The grand finale is a trip to the sand dunes where one can enjoy the pleasure of a camel ride (or by jeep or by foot) to view the musicians and dancers performing on the dunes..............
Both aspects seemed to be already developing when I was there in 1987, and from what I hear, it is coming along... helping to bring money to the people of Jaisalmer (hopefully), though also helping to destroy the ecology of the city/fort with the influx of hotels and tourists in the old city.
God save Jaisalmer, it is a wonderful old place in a boring modren world!
