Sultan and Nanni

Kabul, Afghanistan

Two brothers from Kandahar, Sultan and Nanni Mohammad, had their shop in Kabul. They took one month turns tending the shop. This was an overlap day when Sultan came from Kandahar to replace Nanni.
I met Sultan one day when I was walking down the street and I saw a piece of embroidery in his window. I looked in his door and asked "how much?". He answered a very typical Afghani answer, "how much is good for you?". It was easily a 300 to 500 afghani (currency) piece. "50 afghani" I answered lightly. Sultan just chuckled. "Is that alright, then?" I asked. "If it is just" was Sultan's reply. My turn to chuckle.

Wow. Imagine seeing a picture of Sultan and Nanni after all these years. I bought many things from them years ago in the mid 70s. And enjoyed bread soup with them.
How are they now?
