Toronto 2007 Sail-In - August 4 & 5

.

38 crew from 20 boats attended. We were hosted by Sylvie Lavoie & Bill King of SNOWY PLOVER 26C 31 at the Toronto Hydroplane & Sailing Club for cocktail hour, dinner, breakfast, and lunch. Sunday morning there were sailing, boat handling, and COB seminars ashore and then on the lake aboard WHITE GOLD II 33W and BROADWAY 30U.

In real circumstances, COB 'volunteers' Paul Chandler and Arthur Langley (who were wearing wetsuits for this exercise!) would have been, at best, semi-conscious by the time they were recovered, both after about 30 minutes . . . and this with perfect weather conditions and a water temperature of about 13 C / 56 F.

Sylvie is the Purser of Great Lakes Nonsuch and Bill is the Flotilla Captain, East Toronto Flotilla of the West-Lake Ontario Fleet

Congrats and Thanks! YOU all made our first annual Great Lakes Nonsuch, West-Lake Ontario Fleet Sail-In & Social a big success. YOU came, participated, pitched in, and made it a fun and interesting time for all who were there.

Whether by land or by sea, you made it . . . literally and figuratively. :)

14 crews with their boats, 6 crews drove-in, and 38 people in total. WOW !

Those who remembered the instructions and kept well to the green side of the channel coming and going had no problem. Those who didn't, and there were a few, touched or were stopped on the sand bottom. Both 33s and the 36 made it in and out. It WAS, however, counter intuitive because of that awash sandbar right on the edge of the green side !

Special thanks to Sylvie Lavoie, our Purser. She worked hard before, during, and after . . . all while her mother was in the hospital ! She also did the thankless job of collecting the funds from everyone. In future, well recruit volunteers to man the "registration desk" and to collect payments for our Purser.

Sylvie and husband Bill King SNOWY PLOVER 26C planned and shopped for all the GREAT food we enjoyed at dinner, breakfast, and lunch. Special thanks to their friends at TH&SC who own the famous Penrose Fish & Chips on Mt. Pleasant Rd in Toronto, who got us those fabulous BIG and delicious shrimp!

The first crew I saw arrive Saturday, Jon & Rosemary Oliver MANX 260 were also the first people to ask how they could help. Many others did exactly the same.

Peter Tomlin TOM CAT 26C and Bill King did a great job on the grills cooking dinner and Bill on lunch.

Sylvie, Bill, Margaret Jenkins GOOD NEWS 30U , Lynn McFerran TOM CAT 26C , and others (to whom I apologize for not noting down!) helped cook, serve, and clean up all three of our meals. Several TH&SC members also helped with food and clean up. Happily they also joined us to, " ... Eat And Drink As Friends".

Special thanks to Cameron & son Connor Bourne BROADWAY 30U and Rob & Luci Vaandering WHITE GOLD II 33 who welcomed us aboard and generously took us all out on their lovely yachts for our man overboard exercise.

What words can we use to say thanks enough to Paul Chandler THE ENLIGHTMENT 30U . Not many people show up at an event and volunteer to jump in and soak in cold lake water for half an hour while acting as a C.O.B. victim. Not many also have a wet suit to allow them to survive the ordeal. lol

Paul & Nan Boudreau did a great job leading Lake Ontario Nonsuch for 6 years in the late 1980s. Paul's knowledgeable and generous contributions in our all our discussions and during the C.O.B. exercise were invaluable.

My personal thanks for the efforts our Flotilla Captains . . . Tim Booth, Pat & Judy Faux, Bill Dennison, Bruce Anderson, Chris Guth, John Newell, Bill King, and Bob Jenkins . . . made with their Flotilla crews and the good turnout that resulted.

The hospitality of the members and board of Toronto Hydroplane & Sailing Club was warm and gracious.

If you had a good time, please make a point of sharing this with your Nonsuch neighbours/neighbors now, this fall, over the winter, and next spring. Be sure to invite them to our future events.

Please also help make our gatherings better by sending me your suggestions for improvements, additions, and changes you would like to see at our future Rendezvous. No suggestion or idea is too small. Many small additions add up to big improvements.

If you would like to host a gathering next season or in years to come please discuss it now with those in charge where you moor your boat. We will need space for up to 30 boats and large enough areas with seating indoors and outdoors where we can all socialize, dine, and meet.

You must give your club/facility the chance to plan for such a Rendezvous over the winter months and to notify their members this will be coming. We also need time to promote the Rendezvous from January through June so the turnout is good. The perfect time at a club is when your club has a cruise going somewhere that frees up enough slips and wall space. Moorings and anchoring really dont work well.

If possible, Id like to see a Rendezvous in July in the centre/west of the Greater Toronto Squadron area and during August in the center/east of the Golden Horseshoe Squadron area.

These will both be extra special as part of our NONSUCH 30 1978 - 2008 year of celebrations in the places and on the waters where NONSUCH was born, first launched, and sailed in 1978.

I had such a good time seeing old, recent and making new Nonsuch friends. Thank you all.

Now Im looking forward to seeing some of you at our first Annual CanAm Good Old Boat Rendezvous Sep. 21 & 22. BTW, we may be going to Youngstown due to the incredibly low lake water level. Our friends in Wilson are even considering early haulouts while they can still move their boats!

Thank You Arthur!!!

Without you and all of your hard work this past weekend would never have happened!!! Thank you! Thank You! Thank You!.

It was a wonderfully good beginning and hopefully we will all carry on from here. Sylvie and I had a terrific time and we can't tell you how great it was to look out over our club and see all those wishbones. Thank you all for your help and participation and for making it a memorable weekend for all attendees and our club members as well.

Now that you all know where we are, we hopefully will see all of you returning to visit TH&SC individually and/or in small groups on many future occasions.

Warmest personal regards.
