2006 Route Halifax-St. Pierre

"That is me with the tanbark sail. I keep ISADORA in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia."

"The 2006 sail took me 61 hours. Unfortunately the last 50 (out of 370!) miles was under power. The choker line chaffed through and in the ensuing unplanned and uncontrolled gybe, the sheet block broke off the wishbone. At that point I reminded myself that I was a cruiser rather than a racer and decided the true goal was the passage."

"It was a great sail! The first leg of about 15 miles was to windward going out of Halifax harbour. We did not do well. I was inexperienced with the characteristics of a Nonsuch and believe, in retrospect, I was trying to sail too high. In any event when we turned the windward buoy the rest of the white sail fleet were on the horizon (~ 3 nm) and all well ahead of us. However, at that point we started to move. We took an offshore route mainly to ensure that we were broad reaching downwind not running."

"The sailing started on Saturday at noon. On Monday morning a navy vessel that was following the fleet approached us from far astern. We started to think the if the navy is coming from that direction the other boats were behind us. Sure enough the report was that only one boat was in front . . . a Hinckley 49 I believe. That got a cruiser's sailing blood boiling! Next time I will watch my choker."
