Mike moors his 30U in Mt. Sinai Harbor on the north shore of Long Island.
In 2009, this 30U was successfully (and brilliantly!) freed of her cranky, fume spewing, and hydrocarbon consuming motive device. She was converted to an all electric drive system. Solar panels and a wind generator (yet?) regularly top up her batteries and a small hydrocarbon powered generator charges them when the batteries are low.
Reports that the Shoreham nuclear power plant will need to be reactivated by LIPA (Long Island Power Authority) to support BIANKA's insatiable demand for electrons are just bitter lies spread by jealous diesel fuel buyers on other boats. LIPA has been reassuring the public that their generation facilities like the Port Jefferson plant can handle the needs of residents and commercial operations in the region in addition to the demands infrequently placed upon their system by this 30U.
When plugged in to charge from shore, BIANKA's juice comes out of the LIPA grid.
Mike long worked as the lead Engineer (or some other similarly advanced "techie task" demanding brilliance) on the TODAY show for NBC. For many summers, he lived aboard his 30U on the Hudson River at Chelsea Piers in New York City.
Mike was a major contributor assisting Herk Hechenroether & Millie Jessen make a success of the New York 2000 Rendezvous and in particular the Cruising activities.
