579th Strategic Missile Sq (Walker AFB) site 11 in 2006
Remains of Atas F missile silo #11, north of Roswell, NM. These photos were taken in Jan 2006. The owners had been trying to secure the site, but it was still being broken into. College kids from town liked to break into these closed down missile silos to party. Silos inside were 185 feet deep, and many of these sites were flooded with water. This was a unusual location as it was over a mile off the highway.. These Roswell sites were in demand by water companies after the Air Force had given them to GSA for disposal. Each site had it's own well, except one site ended up sharing from a neighboring site. A recent site sale, about 10 years ago brought $299k and it has no water and it still sits today empty and unused.
Select "original" under the first photo displayed, and the rest will display full size as submitted. Just a Pbase quirk as it saves in several sizes. Slideshow option in upper right corner works.
I am very familar with these sites as I was assigned to the 551st Strategic Missile Sq, at Lincoln AFB, Nebraska and worked in Liquid Fuel Systems Maint and Servicing, in 1964-1965. All these sites were closed down in 1965, as too expensive to operate and the new Minuteman missile was coming up to operation.
I added some photos taken 18 months later, in July 2007, and one can see where someone has tried to break into this site.. Fencing broken into, and even the concrete cover over the fill and vent shaft broken.. One can't secure any place like this, unless you live there.
