Rainier, Near and Far

Mt Rainier, originally named Mt. Tahoma meaning 'mother of waters', is a dormant volcano in a chain of volcanos that run from Alaska down through California. Visible above southern Puget Sound in Washington State, many days of the year the mountain is hidden by cloud or fog - but when it can be seen, it's presence shines like a beacon across the region. Rising from near sea level to over 14,000 feet it is truly an inspiring sight on a clear day.

Like all places on earth, it has been affected by climate change and the 26 glaciers on the mountain are shrinking, and each year in fall it seems there is less and less snow to be seen on the slopes. Still it remains beautiful, and always a reminder of power and danger should the volcano decide to blow and flood the region with mud flows.

In the meantime, for a few weeks each summer, stunning wildflower meadows on the mountain attract thousands of visitors from around the world.
