THE OLD BOAT

What stories the old boat could tell.

Summer days when a small girl and boy
floated on the woodland pond
while Dad rowed or drifted
on a lazy summer foxglove afternoon.

Before that, before the girl and boy,
the man and woman afloat in a new boat
with all the heat and fervor of a summer love.

And after, when all the family had left or gone beyond,
new owners abandoned the boat to idle times
alive with memories,
home to a green and growing world.
