on the few winter days when temperatures fall below freezing at night in lowland western washington, daytime temperatures often rise above freezing, giving repeated cycles of freeze and partial thaw. one of my favorite things to photograph is the ephemeral effect this has on ice patterns: textures, shapes, layers and abstract forms - all gone in a few days.
