In 1790 the owners of Southdown received a land grant from Spain In 1821 indigo was planted, in 1831 the owners changed their crop to sugarcane and built a sugar mill In 1859 the plantation house was constructed. The mill closed in 1979 when it was dismantled and shipped to Guatamela where it is still in service
Southdown is open to the public for tours
