Opened in 1942 England Air Force base operated as part of the defense of our country, the base housed some of the best of our combat aircraft.
The base was closed after the end of World War II but was reactivated during the Korean War.
As part of the US military restructure the base was closed in 1992 and turned over to local government now operating as England Airpark.
Just outside the main entrance are several display aircraft that served at England, most notably the newest the A-10 Warthog.
We used to go camping at nearby Kisatchie National Forest and listen to and observe these aircraft perform their maneuvers on the adjacent Claiborne Range.
