Darby House was built in 1815 and is probably the oldest existing structure in St Mary Parish.
Interesting to note that many of the plantation homes along Bayou Teche were spared destruction during the Civil War because the area was quickly captured by Federal forces and Federal boats routinely patrolled the bayou.
The home is a private residence located on LA Hwy 182 (Old Spanish Trail) not too far behind the Post Office in Baldwin.
Note the large kettles in the yard which were once used to cook sugar cane in the manufacture of raw sugar.
