Morgan City was first known as Tiger Island because the first surveyors thought they saw tigers in the area. Later known as Brashear, a businessman who developed the area, the town was occupied by Federal troops who recognized the area's importance as a trade route during the Civil War.
With the dredging of the Atchafalaya River, the town became more accessible and was renamed Morgan City in honor of the man that dredged it. The area boomed as oil was discovered in the Gulf of Mexico and the town became a base for that industry.
The city hall was built in 1905 and has served as city hall since.
In 1937, the area was chosen as a "jungle setting" for the first Tarzan movie.
