Just outside St Martinville is the old Oliver Plantation. It is now the home of the Longfellow-Evangeline State Park.
Maison Oliver was built around 1815. The adjacent property was originally used as a cattle ranch and an indigo plantation. In the early 1800's Charles Olivier inherited the property and began planting sugar cane.
The house had been painted white until the current re-painting. The house is listed as a National Historic Landmark. The state of Louisiana obtained the property and established the Longfellow-Evangeline State Park named after the Longfellow poem.
