Sitting atop Rich Mountain. There is a lodge here with a restaurant. We could not get reservations at the lodge, but we did eat the buffet at the restaurant.
Queen Wilhelmenia State Park sits atop Rich Mountain, just a few miles east of the Oklahoma border. The area was originally developed in 1898 when builders of the now KCS railroad discovered this relatively flat area between the mountain ridges. They say in it a tourist mecca, and built a resort atop the mountain. Economic problems and fires caused several closures.
The park offers hiking trails and lodge and restaurant facilities. It also sits on the eastern end of the Talimena Scenic Drive, a 54 mile highway so scenic and historic that it has been designated as a National Scenic Byway.
