We bought a pillow case for the cottage and the saleslady was happy to pose for a picture with it. We'd been told on the bus that the market people were often not happy to have their picture taken and it was best to take overall pictures, rather than pointing the camera at someone. The reason for their reluctance to be photographed, the guide said, was a belief among some that the camera would take their soul. I noticed that this lady, in the several pictures I took of her, always had her eyes closed. I wonder if this was to protect her soul from the camera. Given the number of times tourists take pictures in this market every year, its hard to believe the people are really concerned about cameras stealing their souls. But, that's what the guide said.
